Considered in the context of an industry study, “Strategic Supply” relates to any business or industry that has the potential to capitalize on more efficient and effective management of their respective supply chains. Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the integration and optimization of business process and information flows from the purchase of raw materials to the delivery, consumption, and when appropriate, return of finished goods. Savvy application of technology, process innovation, and leadership in the SCM realm have created unrivaled competitive advantage for companies like Wal-Mart, International Paper, FedEx, Dell, The Limited and Caterpillar. Similarly, Department of Defense (DoD) transformation efforts have the potential to create a more agile, flexible and resilient supply chain that is responsive to Commanders and sensitive to taxpayer concerns.
